Sultan Suggests to Increase Rural Development

4

SHAH ALAM, June 28: The State Government has been urged to emphasise on rural development to increase the income of villagers as well as to set a value of ownership in each programme introduced.

This was recommended by Duli Yang Maha Mulia (His Royal Highness) the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah in his address in conjunction with the Opening Ceremony of the First Term of the 13th Selangor State Assembly here today.

He said that rural development must be based on the concept if integrated and sustainable development with the involvement of government agencies to oversee the implementation of the project and to help develop the necessary financial assistance.

He also advised the State Government to pave the way for promoting progress in districts or villages by using the assets and manpower of the people living in the localities.

“This means that when development expends to rural districts, youths no longer need to find jobs in the city.

“This will relieve the pressure on the municipality, the cost of living, transportation systems and other urban infrastructure,” he said.

He said that focus should be given to efforts to improve the quality and productivity of agriculture, including food crops, fisheries and livestock.

He said it is believed that with this increase in productivity, agricultural production will altogether lead to lower prices.

“We hope that the agricultural sector will continue to be equipped with modern agricultural concepts despite the fact that this sector accounts for only one point two (1.2%) in 2012 and is the smallest contributor to the state’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

“However, I believe that the function and role of the agricultural sector in Selangor is very important as a provider of food and raw materials for agro-based industries and a source of income for farmers, especially in rural areas,” he said.

Selangor Sultan Wants State Government to Expand MES Agenda

3

SHAH ALAM, June 28: The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah wants the Selangor Government to continue to care for the welfare of the people by broadening the scope of programmes under the ‘Localising the Selangor Economy’ (MES- Merakyatkan Ekonomi Selangor) agenda.

“I hope that this effort will help ease the burden of the people and reduce income disparities among the people.

“The (state) government’s attentiveness also should include the indigenous people as well as the Disabled so that they can sit equally and stand equally with the rest of the people in Selangor,” he said.

He said this while delivering a speech at the Opening Ceremony of the First Term of the 13th Selangor State Assembly this morning.

As Head of Religious Affairs in Selangor, he also stressed for the Selangor Government to focus on efforts to improve the quality of life of Muslims in the state.

“To develop the community, education and economy must be a priority and this effort has never been an excuse to ignore or marginalise others.

“In fact, progress of Muslims as the majority group in this country is able to positively impact the state and the people,” he added.

Since 2008 till February this year, the State Government has spent RM856 million for the success of 29 welfare programmes under the MES.

Among them is the Golden Age Scheme (SMUE), Free Water Every Month, the Selangor Children’s Heritage Fund (Tawas), University Entrance Gift, Women’s Health Scheme, the People’s Tuition Programme and the Farm Workers Children’s Fund.

For the state budget, the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) obtained the highest amount of provisions, which is over RM130 million per year.

Over the past five years, the State Government has spent over RM40 million to build mosques and religious schools, while more than RM46 million have been allocated for reparations and refurbishments of mosques.

In addition, the State Government has also raised the allowance of teachers of Kafa Schools, from RM400 to RM1,300 per month as an investment in human capital.

Dr Nasir: PAS and PSM Not At Odds

2.1

KUALA LUMPUR, 27 June: The Socialist Party of Malaysia (SAM) and PAS are seen to be similar in their fight as they both emphasise on the people’s welfare and to defend the marginalised due to the rapacity of leaders wanting to retain their power.

PSM Chairman, Dr Nasir Hashim said that the party will be based on the core values of socialism to uphold the fate of the people who are denied the right which is rightfully theirs.

“As socialists, we champion rights and fairness. We will not allow anyone to marginalise anyone. Our basis is love.

2.2

From there, we will receive fairness, harmony and overcome all other things. This means that we respect the people and move forward to empower them,” he said as a panellist in the ‘Islam, Socialist, Liberal! Where does PAS stand?’ discourse organised by the Free Public Forum Malaysia (FPF) here yesterday.

The other panellists includes the Director of Policy Research Institute, Khalid Jaafar; Parit Buntar Member of Parliament, Dr Mujahid Yusof Rawa; Executive Director of Middle Eastern Graduate Centre (MEGC), Al-Mustageem Mahmod Radhi and political activist, Hishamuddin Rais.

Dr Nasir said that currently, the people are often the victim of a ruling government that leans towards capitalism.

According to him, PSM can join in the fight if there are political parties or other quarters that voice the same matter.

“If there are those that fight against marginalism, why don’t we join together? If we are in the same movement, why can’t we be as one?” he asked.

For Dr Mujahid, the agenda of national welfare that has been championed by PAS since the 1960s is a clear picture that the party prioritises defending the people as well as to uphold Islam in this country.

He added that even though the understanding or ideologies are different, however PAS can join forces with political parties such as DAP and PKR through existing similarities.

“Together, we will oppose marginalism. If we look, there have been many PAS leaders who have been arrested under the Internal Security Act (ISA) when defending the marginalised.

“Why did PAS enter politics? Some say we are power hungry. Yes. What is the point of going into politics and competing is not to win?

“Why use one ideology if the ideology is not able to bring about changes. As an Islamic party, we are confident that Islam can bring about changes just like (the changes) brought about by Prophet Muhammad S.A.W,” said the Central PAS Committee Member.

Prepare Alternative Placement for Residents of Kampung Desa Pengasih

1

SUBANG JAYA, June 16: Chief Minister, Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim informed that the Selangor District and Land Officer has submitted a proposal to resolve the issue of the residents of Kampung Desa Pengasih who were ordered to leave their placement last May.

According to Abdul Khalid, among the contents of the proposal is to provide alternative placement for the affected residents in the near future.

“The District Officer did not allow the demolition to take place and there have been discussions between residents and the developer so that this problem can be solved,” he said in a press conference here after officiating the Opening Ceremony and Branding of the 3C Complex yesterday evening.

It was reported that the villagers began to receive notices of a court order asking them to vacate the area in 2012, and the company began to file initial summons against the residents on 14 May 2013 through the Shah Alam High Court.

The notice stated that all affected residents need to vacate the area no later than 28 May.

However, residents appealed to postpone the evacuation by pleading for kindness from the involved parties to provide a placement for them as well as to claim for compensation for crops cultivated over the years.

The residents also claimed to have not received the compensation of RM7,500 by a Federal Government Linked Company (GLC) as promised from the land their homes are on.

It is understood that the land area of 217.5794 hectares was requested by the residents when Selangor was under BN and former Chief Minister, Tan Sri Muhammad Muhd Taib on 8 September 1992.

However, the residents’ application status was unknown until 2004, when the land was requested by the GLC.

The application was then approved by Dr Mohd Khir, for the purpose of building a university. However, the development of the university had not been pursued.

The People of the Federal Territory Will Receive Water Shares If PR Conquers Putrajaya

3

BANDAR TUN RAZAK, 11 Apr: The residents of Federal Territory has the opportunity of acquiring water shares as a result of the restructuring of Selangor’s water industry if Pakatan Rakyat (PR) successfully gains control of the country’s administration after the 13th General Elections (GE-13).

Chief Minister, Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim said that this effort can be implemented based on his experience as the Chief Executive Officer of Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB).

When he was in PNB, he successfully implemented giving out eight million shares to Malaysians, including the famous schemes, Amanah Saham Nasional and Amanah Saham Bumiputera.

“So this is not a dream but why could it not be done by them (BN) who did not do this because they are not interested in the interests of the people.

“Today, we have chosen two teams, one from Pakatan Rakyat and another from Umno-BN”.

“Where one is thinking about corporate profits (BN) and another thinks about the people’s profit (Pakatan Rakyat),” said Abdul Khalid.

He said this curing the Pakatan Rakyat talk held at the Jalan Jujur football here yesterday.

Previously, Abdul Khalid announced his intention to distribute Selangor water shares to five million Selangorians if PR is given the mandate to govern again.

The offer of this water share is another translation of his ambition as a Chief Minister who wants the people of Selangor to own the wealth of the state.

40 Percent of Malays Remain Poor Under Umno

2

BANDAR TUN Razak, 11 Apr: Umno-BN has allegedly failed to defend and fight for the rights and interests of Malays and Bumiputeras when facts have proven that about 40 percent of the said community only earns below RM1,400.

PKR De Facto Leader, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said that although Umno-BN has ruled for more than 50 years, it has still failed to reduce the income disparity between the rich and the poor.

“The majority earn RM1,400 and below…but Umno still says: Long Live Malays! But Umno Malays are rich. They receive shares, taxi permits, timber and land,” he said.

Anwar said this in front of more than 5,000 people in a talk at the football field in Jalan Jujur here.

Anwar stressed that the economic disparity exists due to BN policies that adopts the practice of cronyism so much so that the national wealth lingers around corporate elites who are close to political leaders of the country.

“Syed Mohktar, RM10 billion, Mokhzani Mahathir RM2.2 billion, Mirzan Mahathir RM2.9 billion, Najibs brothers are also worth billions, Taib Mahmud, tens of billions. The People? RM2, 000. This means they are poor,” he said.

Anwar also revealed how Umno leaders are willing to cheat the people by hiding their weaknesses so much so that the main problem faced by the people has never been resolved.

“Ask Umno-BN leaders, What about prices? The answer is that it is controlled. The people’s income? The people are all happy, Corruption? Only a little.

“This are Umno leaders, they do not understand the suffering of the people. Who does not know that this country is rich? Oil revenues reach RM80 billion per year but the income is still at the old level,” he said.
